 The name Guwahati is derived from two Sylheti words 'gua' (meaning-supari, tamul ) and 'hat' (meaning-market).  The name was changed to "Guwahati" during the British colonial period and has been in use since the late 1960s.

Ancient History

 The legend and history of Guwahati is thousands of years old.  Although the exact history of the city's origins is not known, it is presumed to be one of the oldest cities in Asia from epics, myths and other stories mentioned in traditional history.  According to history, Guwahati was the capital of several ancient kingdoms.  According to the Mahabharata, it was the capital of the kingdoms of Narakasur and Bhagadatta.
